Why Does My Child Lose Their Place While Reading?

Why Does My Child Lose Their Place While Reading?

If your child frequently skips words, rereads the same line, or uses a finger to keep their place while reading, it may be more than a simple attention issue. Reading depends on several visual skills working together, including eye tracking, focusing, eye teaming, and visual processing. At The NeuroVision Center, our approach considers how efficiently the visual system works during demanding tasks such as reading and schoolwork.

Eye Tracking Plays an Important Role in Reading

Eye tracking is the ability to move the eyes accurately and efficiently across a page. While reading, the eyes make quick, controlled movements from one word to the next. They also need to move smoothly to the beginning of the next line.

When tracking skills are inefficient, a child may lose their place, skip words, repeat lines, or have difficulty maintaining their position on the page. These problems can make reading slower and more tiring, even when the child can clearly see the words.

Signs Your Child May Be Struggling with Visual Skills

Parents and teachers may notice behaviors such as:

•          Skipping or repeating words and lines

•          Using a finger or ruler to keep their place

•          Frequently losing their place while reading

•          Complaining that reading makes their eyes tired

•          Avoiding reading or homework

•          Experiencing headaches or eye strain

•          Having trouble copying information from the board

The NeuroVision Center specifically evaluates visual skills such as eye teaming, focusing, and oculomotor control, which can affect reading, attention, and academic performance.

It May Not Be an Eyesight Problem

A standard vision screening may identify whether a child can see letters clearly from a distance, but clear eyesight is only one part of functional vision. A child can have 20/20 vision and still struggle with the visual coordination required for comfortable reading.

For example, the eyes need to work together as a coordinated team while maintaining focus at a close distance. They must also make accurate movements across lines of print. Difficulty in any of these areas can increase the effort required to read.

How a Functional Vision Evaluation Can Help

If your child consistently loses their place while reading, a more detailed evaluation can help determine whether an underlying visual issue is contributing to the problem. We can assess how the eyes track, focus, work together, and process visual information.

When appropriate, optometric vision therapy may be recommended to improve visual efficiency and neuromuscular control. Our vision therapy programs use individualized, in-office activities designed to develop stronger visual skills.

If reading continues to feel unusually difficult or tiring for your child, schedule an evaluation with The NeuroVision Center to learn whether visual skills may be playing a role. Visit our office in Montclair, CA, or call (909) 347-7722 to book an appointment today.
